By the Numbers: Week 9, 2018

It was another rough week for the Packers, having the game in their hands just to fumble it away. Did you see what I did there? Well let me break it down for you. In the first half, we shut out the undefeated Rams who have had one of the most explosive offenses this year. That is, until just before halftime, when they managed to pin us in the endzone and got a safety on a run play. They got a touchdown not too long after. We then went from being up 10-0 to being down 10 points. We managed to get ahead again, but then they pulled ahead to 29-27. Then one of our players decided to do something stupid. He received the kickoff with just over 2 minutes to play. That’s plenty of time for Rodgers to put on a clinic and win the game for us. All he had to do was kneel in the endzone. Instead, he ran it out, and that would have been fine except he fumbled and gave them an easy way to win the game. At least they were a little classy, when on the last play they could have run in for another touchdown but the runner hesitated and went down with no time left. I don’t want to see Montgomery on the field for the rest of the season…. he’s a worse runner than Jones anyway. Let’s check my picks for last week:

Texans 20, Dolphins 13 – Correct
Eagles 24, Jags 21 – Correct
Ravens 28, Panthers 24
Bears 21, Jets 10 – Correct
Bengals 30, Buccs 20 – Correct
Seahawks 31, Lions 26 – Correct
Chiefs 27, Broncos 21 – Correct
Redskins 28, Giants 16 – Correct
Steelers 32, Browns 14 – Correct
Colts 30, Raiders 17 – Correct
49ers 21, Cardinals 17
Packers 28, Rams 23
Saints 27, Vikings 26 – Correct
Patriots 35, Bills 20 – Correct

Likely my best week this season, scoring 11-3. This brings my season total to 72-58. I’m staying above .500 from here on out I believe, barring anything crazy. It’s becoming easier to make the picks, despite the fact that upsets can and will happen. I wasn’t crazy picking the Packers over the Rams though, as they should have won that game. Whatever the case, let’s make some picks for next week:

Raiders 24, 49ers 21
Ravens 21, Steelers 17
Bears 27, Bills 14
Panthers 30, Buccs 20
Chiefs 35, Browns 20
Dolphins 23, Jets 17
Vikings 27, Lions 24
Redskins 28, Falcons 24
Texans 26, Broncos 19
Seahawks 20, Chargers 17
Rams 27, Saints 26
Packers 24, Patriots 21
Cowboys 25, Titans 21

Hard to pick the Packers against the Patriots again, but we beat them a couple of times in recent years. Put us in the Super Bowl against them and I think we win, but in the regular season it’s anyone’s guess. I still think after nearly knocking off the Rams, we should be able to handle Brady and his cheerleaders. We’ll check back in next week and see if I was right.

By The Numbers: Week 8, 2018

It was the Packers’ bye week so I didn’t have a game to watch. Normally I might still watch a game or two over the weekend, but as it was my sister’s birthday I decided to spend some time with family instead. It’s my team’s week off, so I suppose it was my week off from football as well. I can say that it was nice that the Bears lost, but unfortunately the Vikings won, as did the Lions though they’re still a bit behind in the standings. Let’s see how I did with last week’s picks:

Broncos 27, Cardinals 14 – Correct
Chargers 24, Titans 13 – Correct
Buccs 21, Browns 20 – Correct
Patriots 30, Bears 17 – Correct
Bills 23, Colts 19
Jaguars 27, Texans 10
Eagles 30, Panthers 20
Lions 21, Dolphins 13 – Correct
Jets 28, Vikings 21
Saints 31, Ravens 27 – Correct
Redskins 26, Cowboys 20 – Correct
Rams 35, 49ers 20 – Correct
Chiefs 32, Bengals 24 – Correct
Falcons 28, Giants 14 – Correct

A much better week, scoring 10-4, bringing my season total to 61-55. If I can keep this up going forward, I should be able to maintain an average over .500. I feel like a broken record at this point with the whole .500 thing, so let’s just move onto next week’s picks, shall we?

Texans 20, Dolphins 13
Eagles 24, Jags 21
Ravens 28, Panthers 24
Bears 21, Jets 10
Bengals 30, Buccs 20
Seahawks 31, Lions 26
Chiefs 27, Broncos 21
Redskins 28, Giants 16
Steelers 32, Browns 14
Colts 30, Raiders 17
49ers 21, Cardinals 17
Packers 28, Rams 23
Saints 27, Vikings 26
Patriots 35, Bills 20

I almost have a hard time picking my own team over the Rams. I’m still doing it because we still have the greatest QB in football, but the Rams are most definitely a more complete team. I haven’t lost the faith though. We’ll see how it all plays out this weekend.

By The Numbers: Week 7, 2018

I didn’t realize that the Packers played on Monday night until Saturday afternoon. Knowing that I didn’t have a game to watch on Sunday, I ended up spending the evening playing Magic with my mini-me and later with my roommate. The game started at 5ish on Monday night and since I don’t get off until 6, I missed nearly the whole first half of the game. I was surprised to see the Packers down at home to the lowly 49ers going into half-time, but I didn’t lose faith that magic would happen. I just didn’t anticipate how it would go down. Who would have thought after missing so many damn kicks last week, Mason Crosby wouldn’t miss any this time around (including the game-winner!)? I was glad they didn’t call for his head, because we knew he could do better. Everyone has bad days. At the end of the day though, the Packers move up to 3-2-1 on the season going into the bye week. Get some rest guys, the road ahead is going to be tough! Let’s grade my picks from last week:

Eagles 24, Giants 14 – Correct
Jets 21, Colts 13 – Correct
Bengals 26, Steelers 21
Chargers 27, Browns 21 – Correct
Bills 20, Texans 10
Bears 21, Dolphins 20
Vikings 28, Cardinals 20 – Correct
Buccs 24, Falcons 21
Seahawks 30, Raiders 24 – Correct
Panthers 28, Redskins 17
Rams 21, Broncos 19 – Correct
Jaguars 23, Cowboys 17
Ravens 24, Titans 14 – Correct
Chiefs 27, Patriots 26
Packers 27, 49ers 13 – Correct

A middling week, I scored 8-7 which isn’t terrible. This brings my season score to 51-51… so I’m right at the .500 mark. I feel like I should be doing better by now. But hey, even is better than in the hole! Let’s make some picks for next week.

Broncos 27, Cardinals 14
Chargers 24, Titans 13
Buccs 21, Browns 20
Patriots 30, Bears 17
Bills 23, Colts 19
Jaguars 27, Texans 10
Eagles 30, Panthers 20
Lions 21, Dolphins 13
Jets 28, Vikings 21
Saints 31, Ravens 27
Redskins 26, Cowboys 20
Rams 35, 49ers 20
Chiefs 32, Bengals 24
Falcons 28, Giants 14

Perhaps I’ll improve above .500 after next week. My team doesn’t play so it’s unlikely I’ll watch any football this weekend, but I’m also going out of town so I’ll be busy anyway. The season is already almost halfway over, but there’s still plenty of games left to watch.

Until next week.

By the Numbers: Week 6, 2018

What an atrocious game that was on Sunday. Not only are the refs consistently screwing up calls (that first touchdown came off of a botched call, where it was pretty damn clear that the punt hit a Lion first, not the other way around), but our kicker cost us the game, missing 13 points worth of kicks. Mason Crosby has been pretty damn reliable through the years, but talk about shooting us in the foot on Sunday. It didn’t help either, that twice Rodgers went down and lost the football, but that still didn’t count us out of the game the way the missed kicks did. Whatever the case, at 2-2-1 on the season, we’re not too far gone so I’m not calling for heads or losing hope. I’m just frustrated with the way the first chunk of the season has gone so far. Perhaps getting back some of our better receivers from injury will help. Let’s see how I did with my picks for last week:

Patriots 27, Colts 14 – Correct
Broncos 24, Jets 13
Panthers 30, Giants 17 – Correct
Bengals 20, Dolphins 17 – Correct
Ravens 28, Browns 10
Packers 27, Lions 14
Jaguars 21, Chiefs 20
Titans 23, Bills 7
Falcons 20, Steelers 10
Chargers 26, Raiders 21 – Correct
Eagles 31, Vikings 21
49ers 20, Cardinals 13
Rams 31, Seahawks 17 – Correct
Cowboys 24, Texans 20
Saints 33, Redskins 21 – Correct

Ugh, a terrible week for my picks as well. I went 6-9, which brings me to 43-44 on the season… dropping my score back below .500, sigh. Oh well, the season is still pretty young. Time to make some better picks for next week.

Eagles 24, Giants 14
Jets 21, Colts 13
Bengals 26, Steelers 21
Chargers 27, Browns 21
Bills 20, Texans 10
Bears 21, Dolphins 20
Vikings 28, Cardinals 20
Buccs 24, Falcons 21
Seahawks 30, Raiders 24
Panthers 28, Redskins 17
Rams 21, Broncos 19
Jaguars 23, Cowboys 17
Ravens 24, Titans 14
Chiefs 27, Patriots 26
Packers 27, 49ers 13

I foresee the team getting back on track this week. The 49ers are in disarray due to their QB’s injury and they haven’t really been a force for a couple of years. I’m hoping at this point that the Bears drop a game, though I picked them to win this week, it would just be nice to get back in the lead of the division. Time will tell though, and I’m looking forward to seeing next week’s results!

By the Numbers: Week 5, 2018

For once this season I don’t have a complaint with the way things were called during the game. I watched all but the fourth quarter of the Packers-Bills game as I had other plans and had to leave before the game ended. At that point the score was 19-0, and we even saw Clay Matthews get a sack without drawing a roughing the passer penalty, so that was a good thing. I’d like to think our defense finally came into their own and managed a lights out performance, but I know that a rookie QB can mean an easy road for a defense, so I’m not going to give them too much credit. Still, a shutout is good, and hadn’t been done by the Packers since 2010, so it was nice to see. Being 2-1-1 is definitely a better start than we’ve had some years, so let’s keep the train rolling! Let’s see how I did with my picks for last week:

Rams 30, Vikings 14 – Correct
Jags 20, Jets 10 – Correct
Dolphins 27, Patriots 20
Eagles 24, Titans 10
Colts 21, Texans 7
Packers 27, Bills 13 – Correct
Lions 20, Cowboys 16
Buccs 27, Bears 21
Bengals 28, Falcons 27 – Correct
Seahawks 17, Cardinals 13 – Correct
Raiders 23, Browns 17 – Correct
Saints 31, Giants 17 – Correct
Chargers 20, 49ers 10 – Correct
Ravens 30, Steelers 28 – Correct
Chiefs 28, Broncos 21 – Correct

A much better week at 10-5, putting me at 37-35 for the season. Finally above .500! I’m surprised by the Bears, who seem to be a legit contender for the first time in a long time. They put a whuppin’ on the Buccaneers, who have been putting their own foot down as of late. The Browns have been surprising too, as they not only won a game this year, but almost had themselves two ties as well. Rumor has it that the officiating was poor and that they were robbed of the win, but I can’t feel too bad since we were robbed by the officials versus Minnesota ourselves. Next week we face the Lions who have been pretty good in recent years but are off to a slow start. Can’t count them out completely, as division rivals tend to know your team inside and out, but I think we should be able to improve to three wins after Sunday. Here’s my picks for week 5:

Patriots 27, Colts 14
Broncos 24, Jets 13
Panthers 30, Giants 17
Bengals 20, Dolphins 17
Ravens 28, Browns 10
Packers 27, Lions 14
Jaguars 21, Chiefs 20
Titans 23, Bills 7
Falcons 20, Steelers 10
Chargers 26, Raiders 21
Eagles 31, Vikings 21
49ers 20, Cardinals 13
Rams 31, Seahawks 17
Cowboys 24, Texans 20
Saints 33, Redskins 21

We’ll see how things go, perhaps I can stay about .500 in my predictions going forward.
