By The Numbers: Week 17, 2018

As the Packers season is pretty much over, it doesn’t really matter that they managed to get a win over the Jets this week. It’s a nice morale boost I’m sure, as they can feel good going into the last week of the season, but come January they will be sitting at home and that’s not something my team is used to. Whatever the case, I’m still trying to have a better season with my picks this year than I did last year, and that should definitely be doable because last year I managed to miss some picks for Thursday night games along with missing one week entirely, so I can probably say it’s a job well done already. Let’s see how I did this week:

Titans 21, Redskins 16 – Correct
Chargers 28, Ravens 21
Colts 24, Giants 10 – Correct
Dolphins 20, Jags 10
Falcons 20, Panthers 13 – Correct

Bears 28, 49ers 20 – Correct
Saints 30, Steelers 27 – Correct
Chiefs 24, Seahawks 20
Broncos 17, Raiders 9

Weekly score: 11-5
Season score: 135-112

It was a pretty good week pick-wise, and my season score remains positive. Let’s make some picks for the final week. I’ll also make my picks through the playoffs and tabulate things after the season is all said and done.

Dolphins 24, Bills 21
Packers 27, Lions 20
Texans 28, Jags 17
Patriots 24, Jets 7

I’ll check back in next week. Until then.

By The Numbers: Week 16, 2018

The Packers were officially eliminated from playoff contention this past weekend when losing to the Bears. There are two games left for them to play but I pretty much already knew this was going to be the outcome of the season a few weeks ago. I held onto hope for a while but it is what it is. Next year we’ll have a new head coach and hopefully some of these young rookies will take big steps in their sophomore years so that we can make some good runs before Rodgers retires. That’s really all I have to say this week, so let’s take a look at my picks:

Chiefs 28, Chargers 21
Texans 24, Jets 13 – Correct
Browns 21, Broncos 20 – Correct
Falcons 24, Cardinals 21 – Correct
Ravens 23, Buccs 20 – Correct
Lions 21, Bills 13
Packers 27, Bears 14
Bengals 17, Raiders 12 – Correct
Cowboys 20, Colts 10
Redskins 19, Jags 14 – Correct
Dolphins 17, Vikings 13
Titans 14, Giants 10 – Correct
Seahawks 30, 49ers 16
Steelers 27, Patriots 20 – Correct
Rams 35, Eagles 20
Saints 30, Panthers 23 – Correct

Week scoreline: 9-6
Season scoreline: 124-107

Still on track to finish with a decent record. Let’s make picks for this week’s action:

Titans 21, Redskins 16
Chargers 28, Ravens 21
Colts 24, Giants 10
Dolphins 20, Jags 10
Falcons 20, Panthers 13
Browns 23, Bengals 21
Cowboys 27, Buccs 14
Vikings 30, Lions 13
Patriots 35, Bills 16
Packers 27, Jets 10
Texans 28, Eagles 23
Rams 35, Cardinals 21
Bears 28, 49ers 20
Saints 30, Steelers 27
Chiefs 24, Seahawks 20
Broncos 17, Raiders 9

See you next week.

By The Numbers: Week 15, 2018

Apparently all it takes for the Packers to get a win is for the head coach to be fired and for me to not watch the game. I’m not sure which of these things is more responsible for the win, but I’m sure it’s most likely due to the fact that the Falcons are pretty shit this year and nothing more. The Packers are in rebuild mode, and at this rate it would probably be better for us to lose more games than we win just for higher draft picks, but at the same time, there are some stretch goals that could land us in the playoffs despite the fact that I doubt it will really happen. Basically we would need to win out for the rest of the season, and a few teams need to lose a few games for it to come to pass. I have my doubts about that miracle, but if it happened I’d still think that we wouldn’t make it past the Wildcard round. Whatever the case, I’m still mainly writing this column just to have a better overall score than last year, so let’s get on with my picks from last week:

Titans 27, Jags 21 – Correct
Bills 21, Jets 10
Panthers 28, Browns 7
Packers 21, Falcons 20 – Correct
Texans 30, Colts 17
Chiefs 35, Ravens 24 – Correct
Patriots 28, Dolphins 13
Saints 30, Buccs 21 – Correct
Redskins 24, Giants 19
Chargers 27, Bengals 14 – Correct
Broncos 28, 49ers 21
Cowboys 24, Eagles 20 – Correct
Steelers 31, Raiders 3
Rams 35, Bears 24
Seahawks 21, Vikings 17 – Correct

This week’s scoreline: 7-8
Season score: 115-101

My season score keeps getting closer and closer to a 50/50 split, because honestly it’s impossible to make picks that make sense. You’d think that shitty teams would lose to good teams, and then the shitty teams manage to get wins anyway. The Packers still have the same record as the Browns and what the fuck is going on in the universe?? Anyway, let’s make some picks for next week and see what happens, shall we?

Chiefs 28, Chargers 21
Texans 24, Jets 13
Browns 21, Broncos 20
Falcons 24, Cardinals 21
Ravens 23, Buccs 20
Lions 21, Bills 13
Packers 27, Bears 14
Bengals 17, Raiders 12
Cowboys 20, Colts 10
Redskins 19, Jags 14
Dolphins 17, Vikings 13
Titans 14, Giants 10
Seahawks 30, 49ers 16
Steelers 27, Patriots 20
Rams 35, Eagles 20
Saints 30, Panthers 23

I’m reaching with some of these picks, as logic tells me that some of these teams couldn’t possibly beat their opponents, but at this point you can literally roll the dice to find winners. Here’s hoping that my off-meta picks manage to be right. As I figure I’m still 14 correct picks over my incorrect ones, so if some of these longshots actually pay off, I’ll come out ahead. As I said I’m not holding my breath for my team to make it anywhere this season, so at least I can be a winner when it comes to this column. Fingers crossed an all that, we’ll check in again next week and see how I did. Maybe I’ll get really lucky and these off-beat picks will come true and my team will sneak their way into the playoffs? Time will tell.

Until next week.

By The Numbers: Week 14, 2018

I still had a slight bit of hope for the season going into this week’s matchup against the 2-9 Cardinals. Then, somehow or another, we lost yet another game. The Packers are pretty much guaranteed to be sitting at home come January, so the season has lost its appeal for me. After the loss, the team parted ways with long-time coach Mike McCarthy, and though I have my doubts that he is the problem, I also know that sometimes change brings greatness. Perhaps we end up with a damn fine coach and we finally get a few more rings with Rodgers at the helm before moving onto the next amazing quarterback. In reality I’ll take just one more and be happy, and I doubt we have another QB like Rodgers anytime soon.  Let’s check my picks for last week:

Saints 30, Cowboys 20
Ravens 27, Falcons 17 – Correct
Broncos 21, Bengals 20 – Correct
Rams 35, Lions 20 – Correct
Packers 27, Cardinals 13
Texans 28, Browns 21 – Correct
Colts 24, Jags 14
Dolphins 21, Bills 10 – Correct
Bears 23, Giants 16
Panthers 24, Buccs 19
Chiefs 40, Raiders 20 – Correct
Titans 20, Jets 13 – Correct
Patriots 28, Vikings 20 – Correct
Seahawks 27, 49ers 14 – Correct
Steelers 30, Chargers 27
Redskins 24, Eagles 16

This week’s scoreline: 9-7. Better than last week.
Season score: 108-93

I’m doing okay still for the season. At least I’ll finish over .500 — I wish I could say the same for my beloved Packers. Let’s make some picks for next week:

Titans 27, Jags 21
Bills 21, Jets 10
Panthers 28, Browns 7
Packers 21, Falcons 20
Texans 30, Colts 17
Chiefs 35, Ravens 24
Patriots 28, Dolphins 13
Saints 30, Buccs 21
Redskins 24, Giants 19
Chargers 27, Bengals 14
Broncos 28, 49ers 21
Cowboys 24, Eagles 20
Steelers 31, Raiders 3
Rams 35, Bears 24
Seahawks 21, Vikings 17

At this point I’m just pinning this column on having a better score overall than last year. I’ll try to keep my predictions hot, so that I can feel better about a dismal season for my team. Until next week, goodbye!

By The Numbers: Week 13, 2018

When looking at the Vikings rematch, I thought to myself, yeah if we win this game we have a pretty good looking schedule for the rest of the season and could easily end up in the playoffs still. After losing said rematch against the Vikings however, it appears that the season is close to being over. I haven’t gone into December thinking this in years, but after missing the playoffs last season, it seems like there’s a bit of a hangover there and I’m not exactly sure what it is. Our defense has been pretty good this year. Our offense hasn’t done too much though, despite having a decent receiving core and a pretty damn good running back. I don’t get it, outside of the shitty calls that have cost us too many games at this point, but even that is an excuse. Injuries aren’t something new, so I can’t use that excuse, as we’ve made it to playoffs even with Rodgers out with a broken collarbone for weeks, so why can’t we pull shit together now? I can’t remember the time when we couldn’t win a road game. People are calling for McCarthy’s head, but I’m not sure he’s the problem, given his record. Maybe not having a group of superstar receivers is a problem. Maybe we shouldn’t have given up on Jordy Nelson. I’m grasping at straws here. We have the same record as the Cleveland fucking Browns this isn’t possible. Theoretically if we were to win out we’d be like 9-6-1 and I just don’t see it happening, but magic happens in December. I still don’t see the playoffs meaning much besides a one and done if we managed to sneak in, but then it could happen and I’d be a true believer again. It’s a tricky spot that I haven’t been in much as a Packers fan. Let’s get on with the grades:

Bears 27, Lions 21 – Correct
Redskins 28, Cowboys 24
Saints 35, Falcons 21 – Correct
Ravens 30, Raiders 14 – Correct
Jags 21, Bills 10
Panthers 26, Seahawks 23
Bengals 28, Browns 7
Patriots 31, Jets 17 – Correct
Giants 20, Eagles 10
Buccs 24, 49ers 21 – Correct
Chargers 23, Cardinals 13 – Correct
Dolphins 28, Colts 21
Steelers 31, Broncos 30
Packers 27, Vikings 21
Texans 24, Titans 20 – Correct

I went 7-8 this week, and I don’t care. This was a fun way to talk shit about football and see how good I was at the guessing game and with my team floundering I find less enthusiasm for this column. I’m now 99-86 on the season for those of you keeping track. Here are my picks for next week:

Saints 30, Cowboys 20
Ravens 27, Falcons 17
Broncos 21, Bengals 20
Rams 35, Lions 20
Packers 27, Cardinals 13
Texans 28, Browns 21
Colts 24, Jags 14
Dolphins 21, Bills 10
Bears 23, Giants 16
Panthers 24, Buccs 19
Chiefs 40, Raiders 20
Titans 20, Jets 13
Patriots 28, Vikings 20
Seahawks 27, 49ers 14
Steelers 30, Chargers 27
Redskins 24, Eagles 16

All my whining aside, I do look forward to football each week and I’ll still watch the remaining Packers games. We should be able to get a couple more wins on the books at least. See you next week.
