Blaugust 2018 Aftermath

Blaugust has come and gone and I managed to complete the challenge, posting 31 times in August. As this sort of schedule is not something I am used to, usually averaging about 3-4 posts per week, I’m glad that it is over. That’s not to say that I didn’t enjoy myself, despite having two surgeries and an overall busy month with the child going back to school and whatnot. It was a blast to find things to write about, to read so many awesome posts from the resurgent community, and to have something of a milestone to reflect upon once again. Not having any community event happening for more than a year, it was nice to have this sort of connection to the wider set of bloggers out there, new and old. Many of us have been doing this for so long that we sort of forget that there are other people out there putting in the same sort of work. I salute you, fellow bloggers, and hope to see you again next year, as Belghast has already alluded to another round in 2019.

It was Labor Day weekend here in the States, and as such I took the time off from writing (or thinking about writing) to play some games. I’ve dipped my toes into Destiny 2, and played some more ESO over the weekend. I also went to the theater for the first time in months and saw The Happytime Murders, which was a good time and the first date night I’ve had with my lady in a long time. Plus, the spoiler season for Guilds of Ravnica (the next MTG expansion) has begun, so I’ll be jotting down some thoughts I have on these things and will get some more posts out this week. We’ll be back to a more normal (for me) schedule so don’t expect daily posts anymore, but I’m going to try and keep it fairly regular nonetheless.

There were a fair amount of awards given out for this event, and having completed the challenge I’ve earned the “rainbow badge” which I’ve displayed on the sidebar as well. Belghast has a great tabulation of the month over on his blog, and a bunch of other people have been doing their round up posts as well, though I’m feeling a bit too lazy to compile stats at the moment. Rest assured that I had a good month in terms of views, likes and comments and I’m happy with that. Here’s to doing it all over again next year!

Blaugust Reborn

It’s been quiet on the blogging front for the past couple of years. The old vanguard of bloggers are still here and typing away, but many of the people I met over the course of the years via events like the Newbie Blogger Initiative and Blaugust have fallen by the wayside. Some have let their blogs die off, some have moved on to other creative endeavors like podcasting, streaming or vlogging, and others simply prefer to interact via social media or discord servers. The ebb and flow of content creation has hit us all at times; I’m no stranger to taking a break from things only to come back later and pick it back up.

This blog has been in existence since 2005, but my blogging “career” started back in the late 1990’s while I was still in high school and the Internet wasn’t nearly the phenomenon that it has become. I first heard about the NBI prior to my involvement, as it was started in 2012 by Syp of Bio Break/Massively Overpowered fame. Syp only planned on running the event the one time, so the 2013 edition ended up being late and after it had ended, there was a call put out for people to help organize the 2014 event. I took up the mantle, and along with people like Doone (who no longer blogs), Roger (from Contains Moderate Peril) and Eri (from Healing the Masses) we ran a very successful event helping new blogging hopefuls get started. Around this time I also started up the Couch Podtatoes podcast with Eri that would run for a couple of years.

In 2015, we participated in the event again, but this time the turnout wasn’t the same and things were less organized. I didn’t have much part in running the event either, but it still happened. 2016 was light again and we started a Discord server but by 2017 the event was pretty much dead. Blaugust sprung up as something a little bit different but still encouraging community interaction back in those early days, but wasn’t run last year either. With a full year devoid of any community events, it’s nice to see that Belghast has taken up the mantle and revived both Blaugust and the NBI for 2018. You can read about his ideas here.

There is a sign up to participate as a new blogger or a mentor (those who have been blogging for at least a couple of years). I’m not sure to what extent I will participate, but those of you who have seen me around for the last decade plus can always ask for advice, I’m happy to help. I will attempt to come up with some writing prompts and perhaps I’ll be able to squeeze out 31 posts for August. We still have this month to prepare so I’m sure that something will come of it.

If nothing else it will be nice to see an increased sense of awareness of the blogosphere and new content being pushed out from more people. If you haven’t done so already, send Bel a kind word or two for pushing the community to interact once more!

You can sign up for Blaugust/NBI stuff here.

Discord Server is here.

Looking forward to new stuff to read!

Couch Podtatoes Episode 61: Evergreen Games

CP4

This week we drew inspiration from a concept first brought to my attention by Void of the blog “A Green Mushroom.” He was the first person I’d heard the term “evergreen” from, and he applied that to gaming in an interesting way. This coincides with a concept I had talked about previous with “session-based” games to a certain degree, so we go into that as well. We try our best to define what we think evergreen games are, and dive into a bunch of examples throughout the show. As always, we’re interested to hear more from you about the topic, so feel free to leave us a comment!

Made today’s run with Rebel, and things were going just fine, til I stood a little too close to an explosion. Doh.

Couch Podtatoes Episode 58: AMA

CP4

We didn’t have an episode preplanned this week and for some reason (namely Blaugust) my creative well has been starting to run dry. Between writing posts every day and trying to keep up with real life obligations, I absolutely had no ideas. Earlier in the week I had the thought that we could do an Ask Me Anything, and put out the call on Twitter but had very little response. As such, I took a look at the Blaugust AMA thread, and decided that we could just answer the questions posed there. So that’s what we did. It’s a broad spectrum this episode but still mostly has to do with gaming. Thankfully me and Eri can play off each other’s rants fairly well these days, so I think it turned out well after all. Enjoy.

Couch Podtatoes Episode 56: Link Dead Radio

CP4

This week we went back to the community well in that we decided to dedicate a whole show to the concept of a link-love post. I drew inspiration from Eri’s series called “Link Dead Radio” and thought we could pull some community posts together to discuss. Turns out our community is ripe for the picking, so we go over quite a few different topics that lead into what I think was a great conversation. There’s some talk about Blaugust in there, various mechanics in games and we even talk a little about Daybreak Games. Some of the articles we talked about are down in the show notes if you’d like to read those as well. Pull up a couch, and enjoy!
