AFK

I won’t be posting anything for about a week, as the power adapter for my laptop took a shit. I ordered a new one today through Amazon, but it wont be delivered. Until next week. I’m doing this from my phone and what a pain in the ass!

See you next week.

“About Me” posted

Just a quick note:

I threw together the about me/this site page tonight and just posted it. The link is at the top of the screen, if you’re curious to find out more.

I have a couple of posts that I’m working on as well, one concerning my Ranked journey in League of Legends, and another on E-cigarettes. The Ranked post is in progress because the season hasn’t ended yet, and I haven’t gotten where I want to be to share my exploits. Expect the post when I get to where I want, or the season ends, whichever comes first. As for the E-cig post, I just have to do some research, but I’ve been lazy. More to come.

Rune Update

Edit: This information pertained to old Runes/Masteries. While I am always updating my information on the site, I am aware that search engine queries are pointing at this post due to page rank. For updated Runes and Masteries, follow this link.

Back in May, shortly after Riot introduced ARAM matchmaking, I wrote a post about covering your bases in ARAM. I had a few Rune and Mastery pages set up in a particular way, and said that this would be a semi-optimal for running almost any champion. Granted, there are some champions that require some fine tuning, and ultimately Rune/Mastery builds are a personal choice, but this was a starting guide for people who wanted to be able to play ARAM (or the game in general) semi-efficiently. A base model if you will, that can be fine tuned to anyone’s liking.

I have since changed some of my Rune pages. I have acquired champions and runes in the last few months, also adding a rune page or two to my collection (took advantage of a recent two for one sale). With that said, I am not going into excruciating detail about the changes, but wanted to give an update to what sorts of pages I am using now. These pages were tuned for classic as I have been playing much more ranked lately due to the season coming to an end (now on November 11, after an extension), but are still very viable in ARAM games.

Previously I only had a single attack damage page, and found that I had the need to split those up, as there are AD carries, bruisers, and tanks and they all can use differing builds. With that said, I now have an “AD/Movement”, “Armor Pen” and “Lifesteal” page that would fall under the AD category:

AD/Movement
AD/Movement

This build is exactly as my old AD page, but instead of Armor Pen Quints, it utilizes Movement speed quints. I specifically made this page for Hecarim, as he benefits from Movement Speed more than any other champion, but it can be used on any carry that needs some extra mobility. I actually designated this my Jungler rune page, but I didn’t name it as such.

Armor Penetration
Armor Penetration

This page is the same, but stacks Armor Pen Quints and Marks. Useful on champs who focus penetration or critical strikes such as Darius or Tryndamere/Ashe/Gangplank respectively.

Lifesteal
Lifesteal

This is the AD carry (or Marksmen as they’re called now) page. Lifesteal Quints provide 6% lifesteal out the gate, so rushing lifesteal items for sustain isn’t required. This is great for those aforementioned crit champions so they can focus on building an Infinity Edge first without needing the 800g for a Vampiric Scepter in the meantime.

Next up, I was sold on the idea of mixing runes finally, but only in certain instances. What I mean by mixing runes is having two different effects within the same type of rune on the same page. For example, the above picture has 9 armor seals. An option would be to have 4 armor seals and 5 mana regen seals. I never used to like the idea, because the stats you get from mixing always seemed less beneficial than when you have all 9 runes. My mind was changed when I started playing with rune/mastery combos while trying to build a better tank and better support page. Here’s the results:

Tank
Tank

The trouble I was having with my old tank build is that I had Health Quints and Health per level Seals, with MR and some form of penetration initially. I swapped out the penetration for armor marks because I would need different pen marks depending on if it was an AD or AP focused tank, and I didn’t have the rune pages to support that. After the swap, I felt like there still wasn’t enough armor, so I swapped out a few health seals for armor seals, and now feel I have a rounded amount of health/armor to start, and scaling health/MR for the late game.

Support
Support

My support build was where my experimentation began, as I have ran more ranked games in a support role than anything else. I originally had Magic Pen Marks, Armor Seals, CDR Glyphs and Gold per 5 Quints. This was far from optimal, and I realized it quickly. GP5 is a requirement for supports, as you can’t take farm — it’s for your ADC. I didn’t feel I was getting enough from the Quints, so I added in some seals. I also swapped out the penetration Marks for Armor Marks to make up for it. Then decided that I needed a bit more mana regen for early game, and put in a few mana per 5 seals. The balance seems just right between gold gain and defense/CDR.

Finally, there is only one Mastery page that I added in to the mix that I posted previously (check the link at the top of this post to see my other page setups). It’s a page I labeled Jungler, but was specifically made for Hecarim in the jungle. However, I feel that any jungler can benefit from it, as it focuses defense, sustain and movement speed, all of which help any jungler.

Jungler Masteries

There will probably be more posts like this from me in coming months, as Season 3 officially ends in November, and during the Preseason masteries and runes tend to change, enough to where much of this could become obsolete. Stay tuned for more as the changes unfold.

A Little Less Extreme

A few months ago in my “journey to metal” post, I highlighted my favorite metal bands. The four I listed are of the more extreme metal variety, being death metal, technical death metal, or some other label that really doesn’t matter because they rule. I’m not really big on sub-genre labels, because all that does is segregate fans into groups and enables the shit-talkers. You either like metal or you don’t, it’s pretty much that simple. There can be some value in having these sub-genres though, but only if you are the casual metal listener, or really just can’t get into all the growling/screaming. For those of you that can’t appreciate the vocal styling of the bands I have written about, I present some bands that are still metal as fuck, but a little more presentable in mixed company.

First up is a band that I got into a few years back, Protest the Hero. From what I had read, the band was classified as “Progressive Metal,” which was exciting because I am a fan of Progressive Rock (bands such as Coheed & Cambria which I have written about in the past). The major difference here is the vocal styling and the somewhat erratic musical progression. Rody Walker has an operatic voice at times, but can still scream with the best of them. Their earlier albums (“Fortress” was the first that I heard) had a harder sound with less clean vocals. Their last album “Scurrilous” was nearly all clean vocals, and is probably more approachable for non-metal listeners. Next week their new album “Volition” drops, after having been independently created with the help of a huge crowdfunding campaign. A few singles have been released thus far, this one being my favorite:

Today I found a stream of the full album, you can check that out here.

Another band that is a little less extreme falls under the “Thrash” label. Warbringer is a band that I have been listening to since the beginning of the “Re-Thrash” movement of the mid 00s. Their first album was only so-so, but their second started to catch me, and by the time their third album “Worlds Torn Asunder” released I was hooked. Warbringer do thrash right, just like grandpa used to do in the 80s. If you enjoy old Metallica, Megadeth, Slayer, or any other old school thrash bands, this is a band that will give you that same feel but with updated recordings. The lyrical subject matter is on par with the greats, but the band sets itself apart with its own personality and also sprinkles other metal influences into their songs. Vocals are raspy but not unintelligible. They are set to release their newest album next week as well, entitled “IV: Empires Collapse.” They have only released one single, and it was some time ago, but still will give you a taste of things to come:

If you enjoyed that, another good re-thrash band is Havok. Look em up.

PBE Plus

PBE

Following the announcement of the Harrowing event skins, I stumbled upon some PBE info via LeagueCraft concerning Summoner’s Icons. I have talked about Icons before, and how there should be more of them available for purchase, rather than them being tied to special events or ranking. Though I think it’s cool to have to earn them during the special events (holidays, when ARAM released, etc.) or doing so well in ranked matches, I think there should be options. As it stands, there are some generic ones available to begin with, there have been ones available though the aformentioned avenues, there were pro team ones for sale, and temporary ones during Worlds. If you miss events or don’t play ranked, nor want to buy ones affiliated with teams, you are SOL. The following icons are going to be affiliated with the Harrowing, IF they even make it to the live servers. It’s something I can enjoy, but then I feel as if they need to just add that option to the store and have some available at all times. Anyway, /rant off.

We wanted to test some new functionality on the PBE for some icons. Each icon will be earned based of certain criteria.

Earn ghost guy icon by purchasing a “mystery” gift for a friend!

Earn vilemaw icon by playing a game of Twisted Treeline!

Earn statue icon by equipping a new ward skin!

Earn ghost girl icon by buying any of the new harrowing content! (see below)

Earn the book icon by earning the other four!

IAutCjz

These icons are in the vein of the default icons. I can see the Halloween influence, yet they are ambiguous enough to be used year round. If they do make make it to the live servers, vilemaw and statue icon are the only two I see myself earning (I already purchased a ward skin, but they may be talking about temporary holiday skins; either way it’s doable).

Plus

I don’t recall if I mentioned it or not, but this month’s Playstation Plus offerings weren’t all that great for me. I already owned (and traded) Kingdoms of Amalur, own Shadow of the Colossus, and didn’t know anything about the poker game or this week’s game. I didn’t even bother with Poker Night 2, and probably won’t. There have been a few free games I skipped entirely, though it’s been rare. Tomorrow’s update brings a new-ish indie game called “Hotline Miami.” I really didn’t look into the game at the beginning of the month, but after looking at some video, I think it looks pretty cool. Reminds me of the old top-down GTA games, minus the cars. Here’s a glowing review I pulled up on YouTube:

Also kicking off tomorrow is PSN’s “Sale of the Dead”, which includes a huge number of games that are discounted considerably, especially if you’re a plus member. The one that sticks out the most for me is Dead Island GOTY for $5. I wanted to get into that game but didn’t buy it on release, then I heard too many negative things about the game play and bugs so I wrote it off. I spoke to a friend who owned the game and found out that later patches fixed it up, and heard positive things about the sequel which is also going to be on sale ($19.99). I own most of the other games that I’d be interested in until later on in the month. I need Dead Space 3 ($19.59) and Bioshock ($5) to round out those collections (though I still would need Bioshock Infinite as well), and both Devil May Cry ($13.99) and The Darkness II ($15.99) interest me. Money isn’t exactly growing on trees though, so I might not buy anything at all. Just thought I’d share my wishlist so I don’t have to cry alone 😛
