Tiny Death Star: The Bux Bug and more

Update: As of 12/17/13 version 1.0.1.4 has been released and the negative Bux bug has been fixed. 30 bitizens bug is still active on my phone however.

As I previously mentioned, I had been playing Star Wars: Tiny Death Star religiously. It’s the first game I actually played more than for just a few minutes on my phone. Nothing ever really caught my attention, and despite really being a game about nothing, SW:TDS was keeping me hooked. Until I ran into a problem.

I had been keeping my levels fairly balanced, but was currently wanting to build a new imperial level. When you add levels, the game randomly picks one of that classification for you, if you want to unlock a specific level, you can do so at the cost of 1 “bux.” Due to the fact that the imperial levels are for crafting items, there was a side quest (not a mission from the Emperor, rather one of the crafting quests from Vader) to build a communications level. As such, I wanted to utilize the level selector, pay my bux and get the level I wanted so I could craft a new item and gain more coin for completing the quest. I had just saved up for a long period of time to buy the first upgraded elevator, and that was making the game less monotonous. The game had other plans however, and after having created that new communications level, I suddenly had -29 bux:

What is this??

What is this??

I did some searching around the web, and apparently this isn’t something that is a bug only on windows phones, or my particular model of phone, it’s apparently affect the game as a whole. Most people triggered the bug in the same fashion as me, but others reported it happening in other instances. I assume that Disney is aware of this fact, as just yesterday I had to patch the game, but the bug hasn’t been cleared yet. I have a feeling that even if they were to clear up this bug, that I will have to restart my game anyway, but if I can do so without fear of losing everything all over again, I just might do it. The game really is that addictive.

There’s a secondary potential bug, in that it feels like a bug to me, but some people are saying that it’s working as intended. There is a mission from the Emperor that asks you to move in 30 bitizens. I hit the 30 bitizen mark even before the negative bux bug hit me, but I thought that maybe it was because I didn’t have them all employed. Once all 30 were employed and the quest was still not giving me my reward, I looked around and found that I was not the only person with this problem either.

This is fishy...

From what some people were saying, the quest starts the count once you receive it, meaning if you had 25, you would have to hit 55 bitizens before the quest would clear. Other people are stating it’s a bug. Whatever the case, I can’t skip the mission as it requires bux, and earning more bux takes away from the negative, but who wants to earn up 29 bux that do absolutely nothing for you? And to hell with buying something that a little patience will get me. So until the game is fixed, I’m not playing it anymore. What a shame!

Because of  these unfortunate events, I decided to see if I could find some other games that were worth playing. I ended up downloading a trial version of Civilization Revolution, which is a watered-down version of the Civilization series most of us know and love. I also downloaded Kingdoms and Lords, which is being advertised as semi-new, and appears to be a similar civ-type concept. I haven’t tried either game just yet, but I will be reporting on those by Tuesday.

I should also mention that my birthday recently passed, and I was gifted a copy of Faster than Light, via Good Old Games. More to come on that title as well.

  1. I can confirm both of these bugs, I just ended up paying the 5 bux to skip the 30 bitzens bug, i initially had 68 or so bux trying to build a communications level also, I was promptly down to about 30 bux of so, I thought I fat fingered something, so I tried building a rec level “snowspeeder shop” and I was promptly down to -175 bux, I promptly shut down my phone and restarted it, luckily for me it reverted me back to the 62 bux that I had before the purchase. I reported both bugs to the help email address, hopefully they fix it. I have confirmed it for the windows 8 App as well as the windows phone 8 app.

    • It’s frustrating for sure. I have updated to the most recent patch 1.0.0.18 and it hasn’t been fixed, but I’m willing to bet it would require a game restart, but I want someone to say “yes it is for sure fixed” before I waste more time on it.

  2. The new patch had just made this game unplayable! It had frozen me on the “buy bulls” screen. My stuff is still selling but I can’t get back to the main screen. I’ve tried everything!

  3. I think I’ve figured out the source of the bux bug (not the solution, unfortunately). When you buy a new level, you can spend a few bux to choose which one you want, but if you unlock that same level from the levels menu, it’s way more expensive. But it seems that the game charges you the same (higher) price no matter how you unlock the level (even when this takes you into debt). The cheaper ‘select a level’ option is basically nonfunctional.
Now if only the’d fix the problem…..

  4. I had this same problem happen to me on Android. I selected build a new level and selected the communications one and it took me from 85 bux to -113 (I’m now at -62).

Did you email their support email? I did as soon as it happen and haven’t heard back (and from the reviews in the Google Play Store, no one hears from their support) so I’m wondering if you had.

    • I didn’t email their support, as all of the reviews on the store had people reporting the same thing, and I’m sure the company looks at the store page. It’s also been discussed on forums and other blog posts besides my own. I’m sure the company is aware of the issues; they are either working to fix them or don’t give a shit. Time will tell what the truth is. I still have the game installed on my phone, waiting for that magical update that makes it playable again.

  5. I.have been hit by the 30 bitizens bug. It came up right as I hit 29 so I thought it would be quick and easy….hah!

I have not noticed an ability topick a specific level, so all my levels are random. BTW, my reward for a communications level is only 1560 coins. that seems awfully low.

Thanks for.the tips on the other two games, I will chec them out if they are on android. Take a look at vengence lite. It is a free game and is similar to risk. There is a paid game called vengence pro that has a.ton more maps. I bought it and dont usually buy games or content.

  6. I have the 30 bitizens glitch. Had less than 25 when the quest popped up, have now 72 and it’s still there.
Used some recruiting vips, maybe that was the case…

  7. My issue isn’t with the negative bucks, but with the fact that I have 16 imperial levels, and the next Darth Vader challenge requires me to have another imperial level… (Which there are none) or spend 100 bucks to skip it. I have 100 bitizens and 68 levels. I seriously loved the game til’ right now. :(

  8. There’s been a new update to version 1.2.2! I don’t know yet the new features, but it looks even more buggy. I noticed the bug on the 30 bitzen mission and just skipped it for 5 bux, as for the comunications level I had to build 8 random levels before the comunications level came randomly, not a problem at all cause I would eventualy need the levels for the next item mission.

  9. Yeah I hadn’t had any more problems until I was on one of the Vader missions, and I have completed all the requirements, but every time I try to accept my reward, it crashes the game and I lose some progress… so I’m done with it again for a while. I haven’t updated it yet, so maybe the patch will fix my individual problem. We will see.
